Platelet-Rich Plasma

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is created from blood by spinning it in a centrifuge and allowing the different components of blood to settle into different layers.  By removing the red & white blood cells (RBC's & WBC's), we can concentrate platelets and growth factors, which are critical to tissue healing.  RBC's do not play a part in the healing cascade, and concentrated WBC's (neutrophils) have been shown to inhibit healing.  This concentrate of platelets and growth factors is PRP.

PRP is now used surgically and non-surgically to help ensure that the healing process is started appropriately where we want it.  PRP has been shown to diminish inflammation, swelling, and pain.  PRP helps with stem cell migration, since platelets are the initiators of the healing cascade.

When PRP is used with the correct methods and for the right reasons and diagnoses, PRP can help diminish pain and assist in the healing process.
